As a result, first-generation Volts produce 149 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, providing an estimated fuel economy of up to 98 MPGe, according to the EPA. Since these vehicles are older, a Volt will cost less than newer models, and you can begin saving as soon as you drive it out of the dealership.
The second-generation Chevy Volt was introduced in time for the 2016 model year. While having a similar appearance to the first generation Volt with a standard sedan look, the second-generation model improved upon the mechanical part of the car. The newer Volts feature a dual-electric motor and generator with an 18.4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack and a 1.5-liter I-4 gas engine. Again, the gas engine simply powers the generator instead of the car. The second-generation Volt provides 149 horsepower and 294 pound-feet of torque, getting an even more impressive 106 MPGe. Nevertheless, despite these great numbers, the decision was made by Chevy to discontinue the Volt after the 2019 model year, in favor of a greater emphasis on the Bolt EV. This may have had to do with the Bolt being a pure EV, or with the fact that the Volt had a more conservative look than the Bolt EV, with its smooth lines and similarity in appearance to the popular crossover design.
Whatever the reason, Chevy’s decision to discontinue the Volt gives you an excellent opportunity to buy a great EV at a very affordable price. That’s because any time a manufacturer discontinues a model, the remaining ones on the used car market will drop in price as well. This also happens when a new generation of an existing model comes out. We may actually see this with the Chevy Bolt EV, as Chevrolet has announced a major redesign of this EV in time for the 2022 model year.
